In this short course, we will be exploring and challenging various narratives that people often take when discussing suicide, and will look at how to integrate them from a community mental health perspective using the 3Rs approach - Recognise, Respond, Reflect.
Through drama and dialogue, we will explore and critique important philosophical approaches that underly the various narratives, and will conclude by discussing a unified, holistic approach to suicide prevention from a community mental health perspective by stressing on the meaning and purpose of life.
SochCast 1: Recognise Suicide
In this video, we explore the question of conversations about suicide and the importance of open and supportive dialogue - both for persons thinking of suicide as well as the community at large.
SochCast 2: Respond to Suicide
Part 1 - Challenging narratives
In this fascinating journey through a world of conflicting narratives surrounding suicide, we will empower you to critique the philosophical theories and systems of thought that underlie the various positions commonly held about suicide in the community. Join us in challenging these narratives, as we uncover a unified, holistic approach that brings ‘meaning’ and ‘purpose of life’ to the forefront while approaching persons who have lost the will to live.
Part 2: Approaching suicidal persons
Through this video, we will empower you to approach conversations about suicide, and include ‘meaning’ and ‘purpose of life’ in your approach to helping such people.
SochCast 3: Reflect on Suicide
Through Reflection, we hope to enrich your learning experience by consolidation and application of what you have learned regarding Suicide from the community mental health perspective. In this video, we will help you revise what you have learned, and guide you to think about how it can be applied in your own context.
