In this short course, we will be exploring Dementia through the lens of community mental health using
the simple and practical 3Rs approach - Recognise, Respond and Reflect.
SochCast 1: Recognise Dementia
In this series of 3 parts, we will explore some of the characteristic symptoms of dementia, and how to pick them up in patients in the community. We will learn about different types of memory, and how they may be affected in persons with dementia.We will also learn about other important symptoms in dementia.
SochCast 2: Respond to Dementia
Through this series of 3 parts, we will empower you with important ways you can respond to the needs of patients with dementia in your community. We will learn how to refer patients who may have dementia for evaluation appropriately, and about the importance of good follow up. We will also look into some of the underlying causes of dementia, and why good evaluations are essential for proper management of these patients. We will introduce the concept of cognitive rehabilitation, and the importance of encouraging patients to engage with their treating healthcare professionals as they help them. Finally, we will discuss the importance of identifying the primary caregiver and also various ways to deal with caregiver burden.
SochCast 3: Reflect on Dementia
Through Reflection, we hope to enrich your learning experience by consolidation and application of what you have learned regarding Dementia from the community mental health perspective. We will help you revise what you have learned, and guide you to think about how it can be applied in your own context.
